“Dr. Aybolit”: A Classic Russian Tale Performed by the Children of Dvorsky School
Directed by Elina Karavaeva, Drama and Literature Teacher
Dr. Aybolit is a popular and beloved Russian children’s’ tale. The doctor’s name in Russian is the phonetic English equivalent of “ouch, it hurts,” engendering the semantic playfulness of the story. The doctor along with several children travel to Africa where he and his assistants cure sick animals: elephants, hippos, giraffes and other animals whom one could not easily imagine submitting to medical ministrations. Even a shark is treated under the good doctor’s care. This book has been highly popular in Russia for several generations.
